Writing an introduction to The X-Files feels slightly pointless as I don’t think I know anyone who hasn’t at least seen one episode of the insanely long running series. What can I say about Scully that hasn’t been written on a hundred fansites or muttered in the sleep of a million nerds?
Scully remains one of the most well rounded female sci-fi characters of all time: a single woman with a no-nonsense attitude to the paranormal but with emotional depth and a sense of humour. What I think marks Scully above most female leads is that although she is stunningly beautiful her looks are never used as a plot device, nor do her breasts ever become negotiating tools. Scully is a smart woman, excellent marksman, and top doctor. Ok, so she’s a little too good to be true, but I want to believe…. in her.
Visually one of the most notable things about Scully is her appallingly mediocre taste in clothes: synthetic trouser suits and low court heels abound while Mulder gets a well fitting shirt and some tight in all the right places trousers. With this in mind I thought it would be fun to try and update Scully’s office wardrobe and make it ready for an after work date.
Keeping it simple Scully makes sure every accessory is functional, with an exception made for a sentimental necklace, and stays within a neutral palette. I noticed that in the first season it appears to be freezing cold everywhere the duo go so I threw in some beautiful leather gloves that not only keep your hands warm, but stop you leaving fingerprints on all the evidence.
Remember true love can strike any time, and anywhere: the truth is out there.
